Professional Biography

Ellen Rintell began her career as an ESL teacher in the Boston Public Schools, and then became a bilingual teacher in the very first year of bilingual education in Boston. Fascinated with learning more about how children learn language, and how people of any age learn additional languages, she returned to school and completed her doctoral studies in Applied Psycholinguistics. She was awarded a NIMH Post-doctoral fellowship in psychiatry at the Boston University School of Medicine, researching language used to express emotion

She has been involved in the preparation and professional development of teachers at the University of Houston, UMass Boston, and the Urban Teacher Resource Center, which served Lawrence and Lowell Public Schools, before joining the faculty at Salem State. She is passionate about teaching English to immigrant and refugee students, and the crucial role of social justice in teaching.

Responsibilities

Undergraduate courses I have taught are: EDU 250A - Language and Literacy Development and EDU 308 - Teaching Strategies in the Multicultural Classroom. She is the former Co-coordinator, MAT in ESL and Certificate in ESL Programs. On the Master's level, she teaches EDU/ENL792, Methods and Approaches to Teaching ESL, EDU/ENL839 Research in ESL, EDU775 Discourse Culture and Literacy, and EDU779 Seminar in ESL. I occasionally teach ENL771, Sociolinguistics. Supervises ESL Practicum Students, EDU796N.
