Derek Barr

I graduated Salem State College in 1992 with a major in Graphic Design and a minor in Media Communications. Upon graduating, I was hired by the college as an instructional media specialist, a position which I held for 14 years. Over the years the position evolved into a very diverse job description including; equipment operation in smart classrooms, digital audio/video production, video conferencing, web page development, and niche technology solutions. Experience obtained freelancing allows me to bring other learned technological practices into the academic environment and vice versa. In short, I showed faculty how to effectively incorporate technology into their curriculum (what works and what doesn't). After 14 years, I was relocated from the Instructional Media Department to The Center for Teaching Innovation, where I held the role of instructional technologist for an additional 14 years. That move better utilized my skillset to improve technology integration on campus.

During the pandemic, I joined forces with ITS Faculty support, aiding with Zoom, Canvas and teaching online tasks/solutions.

In July of 2022, I was promoted to the position of Assistant Director of ITS Digital Media and Classroom Technology Services. In this new role, I will oversee, "Video Services" and "Media Services", in addition to several instructional technology responsibilities from years past.

I currently serve as the Vice President of the Association of Professional Administrators union at Salem State University (ssuapa.org)
